Getting to Greece
The easiest way to get to Greece is by air. There are international airports scattered across the mainland, including in popular destinations like Athens and Thessaloniki, with the major islands also having their own airports, such as Rhodes, Santorini, Corfu, Mykonos, and more.
You can fly directly from major Irish airports, with a flight time of approximately 3.5-4.5 hours. The scattered location of the islands also allows you to create a multi-destination holiday by ferry. For example, you can sail from Saranda (Albania) to Corfu or from Bodrum (Turkey) to Kos, with crossings taking less than an hour—perfect for a day trip.
Getting around in Greece
While Greece's mainland train network is limited, there’s a well-established network of intercity KTEL buses that are fast, efficient, and budget-friendly, typically costing around €4 per 100 kilometres. On the islands, the most popular way to get around is by ferry. Key providers include Bluestar Ferries, Anes Ferries, Hellenic Seaways, and Dodekanisos Seaways.
It’s best to plan in advance and organise a logical route, ideally within one island group, as distances between island groups can be significant. To cover longer distances, you can also fly internally from Athens or Thessaloniki to other islands across the Cyclades, Sporades, and more.
When is the best time to travel to Greece?
Greece is known for its hot summers, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C, particularly in July and August. While the mainland can get extremely hot, the islands benefit from a cooling sea breeze. July and August are the peak months, when the country sees the most tourists, including many Greeks themselves. For a quieter experience, consider visiting between April-June or September-October.
The weather during these months is still pleasant, particularly for hiking and sightseeing. Orthodox Easter, usually falling in April or early May, is a wonderful time to visit, with celebrations including feasts, music, and dancing. Winter is cooler and wetter, with temperatures in Athens reaching around 15°C, but it’s a great time to explore without the crowds—just be sure to pack an umbrella and some warm layers.
What else do I need to know?
Greek is the official language, but English is widely spoken in larger seaside resorts and towns, especially in service areas. You may also hear some German in certain places.
The majority of the population practices Orthodox Christianity (97%).
When visiting churches, appropriate attire is required—be sure to cover your shoulders and knees.
Greece uses socket types C and F, so you won’t need an adapter if you’re travelling from Ireland.
