How to reach Lake Garda

• Flight time: You can fly from Dublin to Verona in just under 2.5 hours, making Lake Garda an easy-to-reach destination for Irish holidaymakers. You’ll also find regular flights to Milan, which is another great gateway to the lake.

• Transfer time: From Verona Airport, it takes about 30 minutes by car or shuttle bus to reach the southern end of Lake Garda – perfect if you’re staying in towns like Peschiera del Garda or Desenzano. If you’re flying into Milan Malpensa, allow roughly 2 hours by car, or 3 to 4 hours by train with a change at Milano Centrale. Journey times will vary a bit depending on which lakeside town you’re heading to.

• Price: Buses from Verona Airport to Peschiera del Garda are a bargain at around €3. A taxi will cost more – somewhere in the region of €50 to €70 – so it’s a good idea to agree the fare before you set off. From Milan, train tickets to the lake usually fall between €20 and €30. A taxi would be far pricier, so it’s best to book in advance if you’re going that route.

Best time to visit Lake Garda

The best time to visit Lake Garda depends on the kind of break you’re after.

• April to June is a lovely time to go, with temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. It’s less crowded, the scenery is stunning with everything in bloom, and it’s ideal for walks, cycling and boat trips.

• July to August is peak season. It’s hot – often hitting 30°C or more – and sunny, perfect for swimming and water sports. Just be ready for bigger crowds and busier attractions.

• September to November brings cooler days (from 25°C in September to about 10°C in November) and fewer tourists. It’s a great time for wine tours and sightseeing without the rush.

• December to March is quiet, with temperatures between 0°C and 10°C. It’s a lovely off-season option for peaceful lake views, cosy villages and festive markets.

• Spoken languages: Italian is the main language, but English is widely spoken in towns around the lake. Knowing a few words of Italian is always appreciated.

• Local habits and customs: Italians tend to take life at a slower pace. Aperitivo – a pre-dinner drink with a few nibbles – is part of the culture, and evening meals usually start later than in Ireland.

• Currency: Euro. ATMs are easy to find and most places accept cards, but having some cash is handy for small cafés, local markets and ferry tickets.

• Getting around: Renting a car gives you the most freedom, especially if you want to explore different towns.
