How to reach Indonesia

• Flight time: Flights to Indonesia from the UK typically take around 14 to 17 hours. Popular destinations include Bali, Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Lombok. Direct flights are not common – most have a layover in hubs such as Dubai, Doha, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, which can add to the total flight time, depending on the exact route.

• Transfer time: On Bali, it's about a 30-minute drive from the airport to popular areas such as Kuta and Seminyak. For Jakarta, the airport rail link from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to the city centre takes about 45 minutes. From Yogyakarta airport it's a 35-minute train ride, while the drive from Lombok International Airport to Senggigi or Kuta Lombok takes 1 to 2 hours.

• Price: From Bali's airport, a taxi costs around Rp 150,000 (€8). A train costs Rp 50,000 (€2.50) in Jakarta or Yogyakarta. On Lombok, taxi prices range from Rp 200,000 (€10) to Rp 300,000 (€15), depending on the destination.

Best time to visit Indonesia

Indonesia's tropical climate means it's warm year-round, but it does have a wet season and a dry season with differing levels of humidity, so timing your holidays might be needed, depending on what you're looking to do.

• May to October is the dry season and the best time of year to visit. Temperatures are warm, ranging between 25°C and 32°C, with about 8–9 hours of sunshine daily. While short, occasional thunderstorms can happen at any point of the year, particularly in the mountains, this time of the year generally has low rainfall and humidity. The biggest numbers of tourists arrive in July and August, and prices are highest then.

• November to April marks the wet season. It doesn't rain all day, but heavy showers and thunderstorms are common most afternoons. January and February are the wettest months. Temperatures hover between 25°C and 31°C, but if you don't mind the high humidity and want fewer crowds, this can be a good time for lower prices, although Christmas and New Year can be busy times.
