Good to know before your Dominican Republic holidays
If you’re planning your Dominican Republic holidays, a little know-how can go a long way. This Caribbean gem is known for its all-inclusive beach resorts, lush landscapes and warm hospitality—but it’s worth brushing up on a few essentials before you travel.
Currency and payments
The official currency is the Dominican peso (DOP), but US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas. Card payments are common in hotels and restaurants, though it’s wise to carry some cash for small shops, taxis and tips. ATMs are easy to find in larger towns and resort zones.
Weather and best time to visit
The Dominican Republic has a warm tropical climate year-round. December to April is the dry season and the most popular time to visit, with plenty of sunshine and low humidity. The wet season runs from May to November, with brief showers and occasional storms, but still plenty of beach time.
Language and local etiquette
Spanish is the official language, and while English is spoken in many hotels and tourist hubs, it’s helpful to know a few basic Spanish phrases. Tipping is customary—around 10% in restaurants, and a small tip is often expected for hotel staff or drivers.
Getting around
Taxis and private transfers are the main way to get around resort areas. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to explore more remote parts of the island, car hire is available—but driving can be chaotic in busy towns. Domestic flights and buses are also available for longer distances.
Time zone and plugs
The Dominican Republic is in Atlantic Standard Time (GMT-4). It uses US-style plugs (types A and B) with 120V electricity, so bring an adapter if your devices use European or UK plugs.
From the beaches of Punta Cana to the colonial charm of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic holidays offer sunshine, adventure and laid-back vibes in equal measure.
