Good to know before your Costa Rica holidays
Embarking on your Costa Rica holidays? This Central American paradise is known for its biodiversity, eco-tourism and pura vida lifestyle—here’s what to keep in mind before you go.
Currency and payments
The Costa Rican colón (CRC) is the official currency, though US dollars are widely accepted. Cards are commonly used in cities and tourist hubs, but some remote areas may prefer cash.
Weather and seasons
Costa Rica has a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season runs from December to April and is ideal for beach trips and wildlife spotting. Expect more rain between May and November, especially in rainforest regions.
Language and culture
Spanish is the official language, and while English is spoken in tourist areas, knowing a few phrases in Spanish is useful. Tipping is common—around 10% is standard for restaurants and tours.
Getting around
Domestic flights, shared shuttles and buses connect the main destinations. Renting a 4x4 can be a good choice if you’re planning to visit more remote areas or explore national parks.
Plugs and voltage
Costa Rica uses US-style plugs (types A and B) with 120V electricity, so an adapter is needed for UK or European devices.
Whether you're chasing waterfalls or lounging on Pacific beaches, Costa Rica holidays are all about adventure and nature at its finest.
