How to reach Sunny Beach

• Flight time: From Ireland, there are no direct flights to Sunny Beach itself. The nearest airport is Burgas, which is about 30km south. Flights from Dublin to Burgas usually take around 3 hours 40 minutes, with seasonal services from Shannon and Cork also available in summer.

• Transfer time: Once at Burgas Airport, it takes about 30 minutes to reach Sunny Beach by taxi or private transfer. Public buses from Burgas city centre to Sunny Beach take roughly 40 to 50 minutes, making it a handy budget option.

Sunny Beach lives up to its name with long, hot summers and mild shoulder seasons. Your ideal travel window depends on whether you're after full-on sunshine or a more peaceful break.

• May to June: These months bring sunny, warm days without the peak-season crowds. Expect average temperatures of 18°C to 25°C, around 9–11 hours of sunshine per day and very little rain – great for sightseeing and beach time.

• July to August: Peak summer means buzzing beaches, packed bars and guaranteed heat. With highs of 28°C or more, and long sunny days, it's ideal for sun worshippers. It’s the busiest time, so book accommodation early.

• September to October: Still warm but far quieter, this is the sweet spot for laid-back holidays. Sea temperatures remain inviting, and air temps hover between 20°C and 25°C. There’s a drop in prices too, and around 7–9 hours of sunshine daily.

• November to April: Off-season weather is cooler (8°C to 12°C), and many hotels and beach bars shut down for winter. Still, it’s a good option for a peaceful and inexpensive escape with fewer tourists.

• Spoken languages: Bulgarian is the official language, but English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants and tourist shops.

• Local habits and customs: A cultural quirk to note: Bulgarians shake their heads to mean "yes" and nod for "no." Modest dress is expected in churches and religious sites.

• Health and safety: Sunny Beach is safe for tourists, but standard caution with belongings is wise, especially on the beach or in nightlife areas. Pharmacies and medical services are easy to find.

Meat is king in most of Bulgaria, but here in Sunny Beach, it's seafood that dominates, although you can find all the usual staples on most restaurant menus.

• Gyuvech: The best-known traditional dish is a rich stew comprising peppers, aubergines and beans, to which either meat or meat stock is added.

• Kiselo mlyako: Bulgarians consider their yogurt the world's finest, and hardly miss a day without consuming it. As well as being tasty, it's renowned for its probiotic qualities.

• Shopska salad: The combination of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, onions and feta, or Bulgarian sirene (white brine) cheese, is hard to beat - and a rare treat for vegetarians.

Meat dishes

• Sarmi: Stuffed cabbage or vine leaves filled with minced meat, rice and spices, then slow-cooked to perfection.

Fish and seafood dishes

• Tsatsa: Fried sprat fish, usually served with a wedge of lemon, these small, crispy morsels are the perfect companion to a cold beer on a hot day.

• Rakia: This traditional fruit brandy, often made from grapes or plums, is strong and usually served as an aperitif - best sipped to avoid a sore head.
